Dora’s uncle won’t let her attend a controversial political demonstration, but she incurs his anger by sneaking out regardless. The thrashing she faces at home is a price worth paying for freedom of speech.

This placard was the one I carried at a protest against the ‘extreme porn legislation‘ in January 2009. I didn’t have an angry guardian waiting for me at home, but I hope I’d have gone even if I had. The amendments to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 were carried despite our protests, with worrying consequences for those who like looking at images depicting sexual violence – regardless of whether or not those images were created ethically and consensually, or indeed whether they depict real people or just cartoon drawings.

  1. Really beautiful, you take the Tawse so well!
By the way – Nicki Flynn used to say the kick after each blow was her trademark. Did you copy her, or is it instinct?

  2. Wow, you really know how to flatter a girl.

If you’d read the blogpost associated with this scene you’d know that I was seriously struggling to take this one, and had to break halfway through for an extended cry. I was determined to bring the fantasy to life, but it was tough. My reactions were entirely genuine.

  3. First of all, the two of you look so young in this! When was it filmed?

Also, I’m curious. I’ve never played with a tawse so I have no idea how it feels. How does it compare to a strap, for example?

Anyway, I liked the scene. I always enjoy seeing you and Thomas. 🙂

  4. It was filmed, I believe, in January 2010. It was the second shoot that we did, and the first shoot with my own cameras.

I find the tawse stingier than the strap, but it really depends on the individual implement and how it’s used. They’re both quite versatile. The tawse is really lovely used lightly, but can be tearjerkingly painful used hard.

  5. Ah, that is good to know. I don’t have a lot of experience but I am pretty sure I’m not fond of stingy implements. If I had a choice, I would likely choose a strap over a tawse. Hopefully someday I’ll have the chance to test out that theory! Thanks for answering my question. 🙂

  6. I look forward to hearing your experience when you do get to test your theory 🙂
