After his last run-in with Temptation, Fr. Underwill is feelingâĤconflicted. Heâs worried that the demon who dogs at his heels is chasing after his parishioners as well as himself, that his weakness is giving these irresistible forces all the power they crave. He prays for strength, for a sign. But the only answer he receives comes from Temptation themself, night after night after night.
In the end, he does the only thing he can do. He gives in.
If he thought this would bring his torment to an end, he was sorely mistaken – and the operative word there is âsoreâ. Within moments the demon has him on his knees, pledging himself body and soul as they claw and stroke at his aching skin.
