Until now, Ellen’s time in the Governor’s house – while terrifying – has violated her mind more than her body. It was clear from the first that this wouldn’t last, but being stripped down by the Warden is still a shock. Once the Governor’s servants have tied her into position, she realises she’s about to discover first-hand what she’s watched in horror since the moment she arrived.
He calls it a ‘pizzle’. Ellen’s never seen one before, but she’s frightened before it hits her bare backside. It’s the worst thing he has, the other girl said, and Ellen can see why: it’s thin, firm, a little flexible, perfectly calibrated for a sharp whipping sting. She knows he won’t hold back. He wants her to understand what her life is now.
She’s left shaking, sobbing, halfway broken, but he reminds her this is only the beginning.
